My class of new English speakers has been around for roughly a month now. They're grown from 4 students to 6, and they've got a good chunk of vocabulary down pat.
Today's lesson was the concept of same and different.
After introducing shapes, I had a same column and a different column.
Same, circle, circle. Fish, fish. Six, six.
I spoke as I drew the pictures.
Different, circle, triangle. Fish, jelly fish. Six, two.
They picked up the concept and we went around the class compairing things. They even used full sentence answers:
"They are the same!"
"They are different!"
Then the director came in to give them lollipops. As she passed them out the kids held theirs together "They are the same!" Then after unwrapping "They are different!"
I felt like a good english teacher in that moment.
