Today was supposed to be my productive day. I was going to do laundry, fix some things, stay in, and take the garbage out. Instead I got stopped at number one since I was out of laundry soap.
And I'm so glad I was.
I walked a weird new route back to Homeplus passing universities, mega churches, and even the park where the students went bike riding on Thursday!
I probably take four to five times longer to shop for anything in this country. Even though Homeplus has some English signs. After awkwardly through the adult diapers aisle multiple time I never did find garbage bags. I was lucky enough to have the checkout attendant who did speak English! I tried to memorise her face as to always come back to her till.
I was about to starting heading back when I heard music from the street, but not just any music -death metal. The death metal band was also a Beatles cover band, possibly the strangest mix of music to come across. Had it not been for the dark cover of 'Come Together' I probably would have wound up in the middle of this street festival.
I visited some of the other stages where I saw a school play, a ukulele band, traditional dancing, a K-pop boy band, and -my personal favourite- a group of retirees decked out with green sequin vests playing the harmonica. There were probably 200 different booths with everything from make your own cake, to computer parts, and even one booth that seemed to just sell fancy mushrooms.
It was a great day for going out and getting distracted, maybe a bit on the hot side.
On my walk back I paid close attention to garbage bags, and I learned that I did in fact see them. They were just really expensive. As I experienced in Sioux Lookout you pay for garbage pick-up by purchasing a sticker -or in this case a special bag. Regular bags probably just don't get picked up? I don't know, it feels like there is always garbage waiting to be picked up outside my apartment. Maybe those are the same bags that I've been looking at every time. I probably will save my memories for the English-speaking cashier and not the details of garbage bags.
