I was planning for a double birthday party for the 23rd of November. One class of older elementary students had two students with birthdays on the same day. I cracked a plan with my co-teacher to bring pizza in the second class.
The purpose of bringing it in the second class was so we could cancel the whole thing if one of the students wasn't there. And sure enogh, one didn't show up. None of the students knew about the plans, so when we didn't have pizza in the second class they didn't know what they were missing.
But I did bring Jenga and Scrabble to break up their writing assignment. We completed the pre-writing part, then played Jenga, then completed the good copy of writing and everyone was now curious about scrabble.
They had never played it, seen it, or heard of it. Which was awesome for me,
As close friends and family know, I am scary good at Scrabble. It's why we never ever play.
Even in a power outage I would approach mum with the box and be rejected. Especially in the last few years where laptop batteries usually last long than the outage.
Finally I had someone to play against, kinda.
I wanted them to like the game so if they were struggling I gave simple clues. For example we had been learning about plural forms and one student's best word was "mice" but he couldn't find it in the mix of letters. So I asked him what the plural form of mouse is. "Mice! ....OH!!!!! I see!!!". It was actually a really good game that everyone enjoyed. But especially me. I love Scrabble.
